Research and Scholarship

The University of Mississippi School of Nursing provides and supports an environment that encourages research in keeping with its mission.

The School of Nursing hosts one of the country's premier research laboratory located within the state's only academic health sciences center nursing school. Faculty and students are provided the opportunity and support necessary to develop and implement a professional research and scholarship trajectory.

History of success

Many School of Nursing senior researchers have long histories of success. School of Nursing extramural funding for research, education and practice averages $1.5 million per year. Additionally, faculty members frequently collaborate with other disciplines on this academic health science campus, as well as with experts across the nation.

Opportunities to develop

The School of Nursing provides opportunities for faculty and students to develop research programs with school seed-grant awards. These monies are available through a competitive application process and provide for pilot studies, consultation and other resources needed to strengthen the faculty and student research efforts.

Once seed-grant funds have been secured, faculty often plan to write for UMMC intramural funding that can provide as much as $30,000 in monetary support to prepare for extramural grant writing.

Doctoral programs

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program provides an opportunity for students to work with faculty to develop their own research programs and to gain experience in research methods. Likewise, researchers from other disciplines work in collaboration with faculty and students to develop and conduct qualitative and quantitative research and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program provides opportunities for students to translate research into evidence-based programs.
